We have obtained permission to use a parking lot on North Main Street to create a temporary activity plaza as the precursor to the development of a permanent public market on the empty lot at the top end of North Main next to Garret Packing.  

 

‘Freewater Square’ will include a first-class restroom trailer, board games, foosball and ping pong tables, corn hole toss board, exercise equipment, small business incubator cabins and tables and chairs.  All of which will be available for people to use 250 days a year.  We will also offer family events such as movie nights, concerts and tournaments.  The goal is to have ‘Freewater Square’ complete by Fall 2020. 

 

Through site visits and professional guidance, we have determined that the platform for creating a downtown that will serve the needs of the community, and draw people to our downtown district, is to move away from individual events and create an activity plaza that will provide year-round entertainment and activities. When we asked our city’s residents, using surveys and community outreach events, what would get them to spend more time in downtown Freewater the top three responses were: more family entertainment and activities, more shopping opportunities, and more variety in dining.

 

The ultimate purpose of the Freewater Square project is to be the catalyst for building our downtown districts so that it can provide all of these, and more, for our residents. Milton-Freewater will benefit from the creation of family friendly low-cost activities within the city. Clubs, Organizations and groups will benefit through the creation of an alternate location for holding fund raising and social events that will provide maximum exposure to their programs. Main Street Business Owners will also benefit through more foot traffic to the downtown district resulting in increased sales and new businesses downtown occupying vacant properties.

 

We are committed to improving the economic vitality of Downtown Freewater and the community at large and believe that this project will provide the momentum needed to accomplish our goal of a thriving main street.
